In the ever-evolving field of assisted reproductive technology, pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) has emerged as a powerful tool, empowering couples to take control of their fertility journey. It enhances the success rates of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ensures the health of future generations. This blog post will explore the concept of PGT and delve into its various categories, providing a comprehensive understanding of this crucial aspect of modern fertility treatment.

What is Pre-implantation Genetic Testing?

Pre-implantation genetic testing is a sophisticated procedure performed on embryos created through IVF before they are transferred to the uterus. This process involves removing a small number of cells from the embryo and analysing them for specific genetic conditions or chromosomal abnormalities. The primary goal of PGT is to identify embryos with the highest potential for successful implantation and healthy development, thereby ensuring the health of future generations.

Categories of Pre-implantation Genetic Testing

There are three main categories of pre-implantation genetic testing, each serving a specific purpose:

  1. PGT-A (Aneuploidy)
PGT-A is used to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities. This test examines all 23 pairs of chromosomes to detect conditions such as Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, or other chromosomal disorders that can lead to implantation failure, miscarriage, or congenital disabilities.

  2. PGT-M (Monogenic/Single Gene Defects)
PGT-M is employed when a known genetic mutation exists in the family history. This test identifies specific single-gene disorders such as cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease, or sickle cell anaemia. PGT-M allows couples with a high risk of passing on genetic disorders to select embryos free from the specific condition.

  3. PGT-SR (Structural Rearrangements)
PGT-SR is used to identify embryos free from chromosomal structural rearrangements, such as translocations or inversions. These rearrangements can lead to recurrent miscarriages or the birth of children with genetic abnormalities. By selecting embryos without these structural issues, PGT-SR can significantly improve the chances of a successful pregnancy and healthy baby.

Benefits of Pre-implantation Genetic Testing

The advantages of PGT are numerous and can be life-changing for many couples struggling with infertility or genetic concerns:

  • Increased IVF success rates
  • Reduced risk of miscarriage
  • Lower chances of passing on genetic disorders
  • Potential reduction in the number of IVF cycles needed
  • Peace of mind for couples with known genetic risks

Pre-implantation genetic testing has revolutionized the field of assisted reproduction, offering hope to countless couples facing genetic challenges or recurrent IVF failures. By understanding the different categories of PGT – PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR – patients can make informed decisions about their fertility treatment options.
